When he said he loves me was it a joke?

ok so we were in our hitstory class and was doing projects and i was assigned to a all boys group. well there is this one boy (lets call him peter) well i like peter and hes the funny, cute kinda guy. well he is always sayng jokes and stuff. and today he was talking to me and his frined says i think he like you to me and peter just goes like yea of couse i ove you and i was just silent. was this a joke or what?
